Why Locals Love Hide Sushi
Nestled in the bustling heart of Los Angeles' Sawtelle neighborhood, Hide Sushi offers an authentic Japanese dining experience that will delight sushi lovers and newcomers alike. Specializing in fresh, traditional sushi and sashimi, this cozy spot has earned a devoted following thanks to its commitment to quality and genuine flavors.
At Hide Sushi, the menu presents an impressive variety of sushi rolls and sashimi cuts that are as visually appealing as they are delectable. Imagine the delicate Norimaki rolls, filled with shiitake mushrooms or kanpyo, wrapped perfectly in nori, or the tender nigiri selections featuring buttery salmon, sweet shrimp, and melt-in-your-mouth halibut. The chirashi bowl, brimming with assorted fresh fish over a bed of vinegared rice, is a celebration of textures and tastes, offering a harmonious bite with each spoonful.
The sashimi platters stand out for their impeccable freshness—think silky slices of tuna, yellowtail, and Spanish mackerel that sparkle with ocean freshness. For the adventurous palate, the giant clam sashimi is a unique treat that adds a luxurious dimension to the meal. Complementing these are thoughtful side dishes like cucumber paired with succulent octopus or giant clams, which provide refreshing contrasts that cleanse the palate.
What truly sets Hide Sushi apart is its welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere—perfect for intimate date nights or casual gatherings. The warm, inviting ambiance creates a sense of stepping into a neighborhood gem rather than a bustling commercial restaurant. Patrons rave about the attentive and friendly staff who make every visit feel personalized and special.
One of the remarkable aspects is the authentic Japanese environment, highlighted by the presence of Japanese-speaking staff and sushi masters behind the counter, allowing guests to engage in meaningful culinary conversations. While the restaurant operates on a cash-only basis, the value for quality and portion size far exceeds expectations—making it an affordable luxury in the city’s competitive sushi scene.
Regular diners especially praise the standout dishes such as the crispy fried shrimp heads, luscious scallops, and perfectly grilled unagi (freshwater eel), each meticulously prepared to bring out its full flavor profile. The salmon nigiri, reputed by many as among the best in the city, boasts a buttery texture that simply melts on contact, inviting you to savor every bite.
Whether you're craving classic sashimi, innovative rolls, or comforting hot dishes like teriyaki beef and chicken, Hide Sushi skillfully marries tradition with approachability. Their dedication to freshness and flavor craftsmanship guarantees an unforgettable dining experience that keeps customers coming back.
For those seeking a genuine taste of Japanese culinary artistry within a cozy, inviting setting, Hide Sushi is a must-visit destination on Sawtelle Boulevard. With complimentary guest valet parking adding to the convenience, your next sushi night out is effortlessly elevated.

Hide Sushi is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the area. They have very good selections of sashimi and sushi, and the fishes are incredibly fresh. The service is exceptional, and the staffs are super friendly. They do have other hot dishes like Teriyaki chicken and beef as well as dynamite. This is a perfect place for date night with cozy ambiance without breaking your wallet. Quick tips: Cash only place and they have valet parking in the back of the restaurant. They also have ATM machine inside the restaurant.

A wonderful CASH ONLY local sushi spot that hits all the marks. Japanese speaking staff. The seafood is fresh, varied, and large pieces at a great price. Really liked the sweet shrimp where they fried the shrimp heads, the juicy scallops, the mackerel, the sole aka halibut, and unagi (freshwater eel). The monkfish liver was quite unique, a little like crab roe. Great nigiri set and sake. There's also a small free parking lot. The service is fast and cordial. The ambiance has a warm inviting aura.

** Important to note: this spot is cash only! ** A superb hole-in-the-wall sushi spot in Sawtelle that deserves a spot in your sushi rotation! I had walked past this spot a handful of times, but never gone in. Oh my goodness, the salmon nigiri might be the best I’ve ever had. Such buttery salmon, we had to order more before we left it was so good. The wait staff were friendly, the food was prepared quickly, and the interior was decorated nicely!

Love these venerable sushi spots that have been around for 50 years and up. And yes, the sushi was top tier and we enjoyed chatting with one of the sushi masters at the counter. I just have a couple bugaboos that dock a star. 1. They use kikkoman straight from the bottle instead of making their own shoyu cocktail 2. The server could have done better. He A) ignored my request for no ice in the water; and B) reached around me to take a dishes away while I was counting the cash for the bill. (Nobody was waiting for our spot and it still wouldn’t be appropriate if they were) So I am glad to have gone there but not a priority to return.

Our best sushi experience so far in Sawtelle! Sashimi was fresh and tasty, grilled beef was tender and delicious, great tempura too! Even gave us a couple of appetizer dishes. Chef asked us for our feedback when we finished. Would definitely recommend! Complimentary guest valet parking available.

This is a very traditional sushi restaurant and it was very good! Sat at the bar and I had Toro was so fresh and tasty! Negi Hama was phenomenal! I asked the chef for a special and he made a special savory albacore nigiri, delicious! Great service too!

2024-3 visited again. Still good quality. We had a lot for two people. I am satisfied with the food quality. It’s my first time to have monkfish liver and it was pretty good. I also like urchine, eel and the white tuna. About 140 for two people including tips. Several things you need to be careful: 1. They are pretty slow on preparing food. 2. They only receive CASH. They have an ATM in the restaurant but it requires 1% service fee. 3. There is a free parking lot but you need to give them your key, because they need to move your car if needed.

Our new favorite sushi joint. Fresh fish, nice ambiance and friendly service that isn't over the top. Vegetables and all ingredients seem really fresh. Bring cash (no cards), great value for the price in today's world
